Honest assessments of Portland's most distinctive neighborhoods — including the things the listing photos won't show you.
Young families, creatives, first-time buyers
Alberta has gentrified significantly over the past decade. It's vibrant and walkable, but prices have risen accordingly. The Last Thursday art walk is genuinely great. Watch for deferred maintenance on older bungalows.
Families, people who want a neighborhood feel
One of Portland's most livable neighborhoods. Great schools, Oaks Park, the Willamette riverfront. Slightly less walkable than inner SE, but the trade-off in quality of life is worth it for many buyers.
Food lovers, cyclists, urban lifestyle seekers
Division Street has some of Portland's best restaurants. Hawthorne is classic Portland — bookstores, vintage shops, coffee. Very walkable. Homes can be smaller and older, so inspection is critical.
Young professionals, investors, culture seekers
North Mississippi Ave has transformed dramatically. Great bars, restaurants, and community feel. Still more affordable than inner SE. The area has seen significant change — which means opportunity but also displacement tensions.
Buyers who want character homes and history
One of Portland's most architecturally significant neighborhoods. Beautiful craftsman and colonial revival homes. Higher price point, but the homes are genuinely special. Be prepared for older systems and higher maintenance costs.
Value seekers, first-time buyers, adventurous buyers
St. Johns is genuinely Portland's best-kept secret. The Cathedral Park under the St. Johns Bridge is stunning. More affordable than most of Portland, with a real neighborhood feel. The commute downtown is longer — factor that in.
Buyers who prioritize space, nature, and views
The West Hills offer incredible views and large lots with mature trees. But you're trading walkability for space. Car-dependent, and the winding roads can be challenging in winter. The Forest Park access is unbeatable.
Urban lifestyle, condo buyers, empty nesters
The most walkable neighborhood in Portland. Mostly condos and lofts. Great for people who want urban living without a car. HOA fees can be significant — always factor those into your total cost calculation.
Let's talk about your priorities and I'll give you my honest recommendation.
